Founded in 1882, the club has amassed over 130 major honors, establishing themselves as one of the world's most successful teams. Despite being rejected by Glentoran as a youth for being "too small and light," George Best made a memorable appearance for them in their centenary match against Manchester United. Roy Coyle took over as manager in 1997, initiating a period of success. In the 2002–03 season, Glentoran clinched three out of four trophies, including the Irish League championship, Irish League Cup, and County Antrim Shield. However, they narrowly missed completing a clean sweep, falling short in the Irish Cup Final against Coleraine. This near miss echoed Linfield's previous achievements, who are the only Irish League team to complete the clean sweep of all trophies, doing so three times in their history.
