Following the retirements of veterans like Krol and Rensenbrink, the Netherlands faced a challenging period in their history. They experienced setbacks by failing to qualify for major tournaments: the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Euro 1984 in France, and the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Their exclusion from the French tournament was particularly heartbreaking, as they missed out due to goal difference when Spain scored twelve goals in the final game against Malta. Despite both teams having the same goal difference (+16), Spain secured qualification by scoring two more goals than the Netherlands. During the qualification phase for the 1986 World Cup, the Netherlands finished in second place and advanced to the playoffs against neighbors Belgium. Despite losing the first leg 1–0 in Brussels, they held a promising 2–0 lead at Rotterdam with only minutes remaining. However, Georges Grün's header in the 84th minute resulted in the Netherlands' elimination as Belgium advanced to the World Cup on away goals.
