Under new coach Bert van Marwijk, the Netherlands achieved a perfect record in their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, winning all eight matches. They comfortably topped Group E and defeated Slovakia in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, after trailing 1-0 at halftime against Brazil, Wesley Sneijder scored twice in the second half to secure a spot in the semifinals, where they won 3-2 against Uruguay. The team reached their first World Cup final since 1978 but lost to Spain 1-0, with Andrés Iniesta scoring in extra time. From August to September 2011, the Netherlands held the number one spot in the FIFA World Ranking, becoming the second team to top the rankings without having won a World Cup. For Euro 2012, the Netherlands were placed in the challenging Group B, alongside Germany, Portugal, and Denmark, known as the "Group of Death." They suffered an unprecedented defeat, losing all three group matches. Football legend Johan Cruyff criticized the star players for their poor play and execution. Following this disappointing performance, manager Bert van Marwijk resigned.
