In Euro 1992, the Dutch team entered as one of the favorites, particularly after topping their group ahead of Germany, Scotland, and the CIS. However, their journey came to an end in the semi-finals when they were defeated on penalties by the eventual champions, Denmark, following a 2-2 draw in regular time. Dennis Bergkamp emerged as the tournament's top scorer with three goals. Additionally, this tournament marked the final major competition for Van Basten, who retired from football shortly afterward due to injury.
