During the 2000–2001 and 2001–2002 seasons, the Italian national football team experienced contrasting fortunes. In 2000–2001, they focused on qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, finishing top of their group with strong performances, including victories over teams like Romania and Hungary. However, they struggled in friendlies, such as a loss to Argentina.

By the 2001–2002 season, under Giovanni Trapattoni's management, Italy prepared for the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. With key players like Gianluigi Buffon, Paolo Maldini, Francesco Totti, and Alessandro Del Piero, they were considered a strong contender. Despite solid group-stage performances, Italy faced a controversial exit in the Round of 16 against South Korea, marked by contentious refereeing decisions.
