The 2001–02 season marked Juventus Football Club's 104th year and 100th consecutive season in Italy's top football division. Juventus broke a three-year title drought by winning their 26th Serie A championship after a dramatic final day. Juventus secured a 2–0 victory against Udinese, while Inter Milan, despite leading twice, lost 4–2 to Lazio, sealing the title for Juventus. In the UEFA Champions League, Juventus exited in the second group stage, and they were runners-up in the Coppa Italia, losing to Parma on away goals after a 2–2 aggregate draw. Key players included Gianluigi Buffon, who established himself as the world's best goalkeeper, and David Trezeguet, who shared the Serie A top scorer title with Dario Hübner of Piacenza. Alessandro Del Piero also contributed significantly with 16 goals. Notable pre-season signings included Buffon and Lilian Thuram from Parma, and Pavel Nedvěd from Lazio, who replaced the departed Zinedine Zidane. Thuram ended up playing as a right wing-back instead of center-back, and Nedvěd performed well but did not reach his peak form. Marcelo Salas, also from Lazio, had a disappointing season due to a serious knee injury. The sale of Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid for €77.5 million set a world transfer record, while Buffon's €45 million transfer from Parma became the most expensive for a goalkeeper.
