After starting the season without major signings, Manchester United faced criticism, especially after a 3–1 loss to Aston Villa. However, they quickly bounced back, winning five consecutive league matches and briefly topping the table. Eric Cantona’s return on 1 October helped them secure a 2–2 draw against Liverpool. Despite early exits from both the League Cup and UEFA Cup, they maintained a strong home record. United remained unbeaten through October and November but fell behind Newcastle, eventually trailing by 10 points by Christmas. A pivotal 2–0 victory over Newcastle on 27 December narrowed the gap to seven points. After some ups and downs, including a tough FA Cup third-round match against Sunderland, United managed to advance in the tournament. February saw United winning all four league matches, including a significant 6–0 victory over Bolton. Their strong performance continued into March, culminating in a title-deciding match against Newcastle where Cantona scored to reduce the deficit to one point. By late March, United had taken the lead in the league and maintained it until the end of the season. They secured the title with a 3–0 win over Middlesbrough and capped off their success with a 1–0 victory against Liverpool in the FA Cup final, marking their second double win. The season also featured notable departures, including veteran defenders and goalkeeper Tony Coton. Speculation about signing a world-class striker, potentially Alan Shearer, emerged as United aimed to enhance their squad. Additionally, the season was marked by a memorable incident where United changed their kit at halftime during a match, which Ferguson attributed to difficulties in player visibility on the pitch.
