After finishing third in the previous two seasons, Manchester United improved slightly to secure second place in the 2005–06 season, although they were still 8 points behind the leaders. Despite this progress in the league, their European performance suffered significantly as they failed to reach the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1994–95. United performed better in the FA Cup, reaching the Fifth Round, but their standout achievement was winning the League Cup, where they defeated Wigan Athletic 4–0 in the final. They also became the first Premier League club to score 1,000 goals, a milestone achieved during a 4–1 loss to Middlesbrough on October 29, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting the historic goal. The season also marked the departure of club captain Roy Keane, who had been with United since 1993. Keane's final appearance was on September 18, 2005, against Liverpool, where he was injured late in the match. He left the club for Celtic on November 18, 2005, and was succeeded as captain by Gary Neville. Just a week later, on November 25, the club mourned the passing of legendary former player George Best, who died at the age of 59.
