In the summer of 1989, Marseille saw the departure of key players, including German striker Klaus Allofs to Bordeaux and French defender Yvon Le Roux to PSG. Owner Bernard Tapie reinforced the squad by signing Enzo Francescoli, Carlos Mozer, Jean Tigana, Alain Roche, Manuel Amoros, and Chris Waddle. Waddle's transfer from Tottenham for £4.5 million was particularly notable, matching a British record fee and becoming the sixth highest ever paid at that time. Marseille entered the season as the defending French Division 1 champions and successfully retained their title, securing their seventh French league championship overall. They also advanced to the semi-finals of both the Coupe de France and the European Cup but were eliminated in both competitions at that stage.
