Head coach Aníbal Ruiz led a squad comprising 8 European-based players and 11 South American-based players, including captain Carlos Gamarra, to the 2006 tournament in Germany. This marked Paraguay's third consecutive appearance in the FIFA World Cup, boasting a roster of seasoned players. Paraguay found themselves placed in Group B alongside England, Sweden, and Trinidad and Tobago. Their campaign began against England on June 10, resulting in a 1-0 loss despite a competitive effort. A subsequent match against Sweden on June 15 ended in defeat, sealing Paraguay's elimination after just two matches without scoring a goal. Their only victory came against Trinidad and Tobago on June 20, with a 2-0 win. Despite this win, Paraguay finished third in their group, failing to advance beyond the group stage and becoming the only South American team not to do so. Following the conclusion of Paraguay's World Cup journey, Aníbal Ruiz stepped down as head coach, and Raúl Vicente Amarilla assumed the role on an interim basis.
