During the 1992–93 season, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), led by goalkeeper Bernard Lama and featuring talents like Alain Roche, Vincent Guérin, and striker George Weah, reached their first European semifinal. They progressed through the UEFA Cup by defeating PAOK, Napoli, and Anderlecht before facing Real Madrid in the quarterfinals. After losing the first leg 3–1, PSG staged a remarkable comeback in the second leg, winning 4–1 with a last-minute header from Antoine Kombouaré, earning him the nickname "Gold Helmet." However, their journey ended in the semifinals against Juventus. Domestically, PSG claimed the Coupe de France title, defeating Nantes 3–0 without conceding a goal throughout the tournament. This win marked their first trophy since 1986 and was a significant moment as it came during the Canal+ era. The season also saw the birth of "Le Classique," the intense rivalry between PSG and Marseille. Their first match was infamous for its violence, earning the nickname "The Butchery of 1992," with Marseille winning 1–0. In a crucial title-deciding match, PSG initially led, but Marseille came back to win 3–1. Following Marseille's involvement in a match-fixing scandal, they were stripped of the title, which PSG refused to accept to avoid upsetting their Marseille subscribers. Consequently, the 1993 title remains unassigned, leading to accusations from Marseille fans that PSG conspired to dethrone them.
