The 1996-1997 season marked the end of Paris Saint-Germain's period of success that began in 1994. The club did not secure any titles that year. They finished second in the league behind Monaco and were runners-up in the Cup Winners' Cup, losing to Ronaldo's Barcelona due to a penalty goal. Additionally, PSG faced defeat in the UEFA Super Cup, where they suffered a heavy 9-2 aggregate loss to Juventus.
