angers’ 1996–97 season under Walter Smith was another landmark in the club’s history, as they secured their ninth consecutive Scottish Premier Division title, equalling Celtic’s long‑standing record. The team also lifted the Scottish League Cup, defeating Hearts 4–3 in a thrilling final, but were knocked out of the Scottish Cup at the quarter‑final stage by Celtic. In Europe, Rangers reached the Champions League group stage, facing Ajax, Auxerre, and Grasshopper, but finished bottom of the group with just one win. Over the course of the season, Smith invested heavily, bringing in Jörg Albertz, Joachim Björklund, and Sebastián Rozental, while injuries forced the temporary return of Mark Hateley. The standout performer was Brian Laudrup, who finished as both league and overall top scorer (17 and 21 goals respectively), supported by key contributions from Paul Gascoigne, Ally McCoist, and captain Richard Gough.
