Real Madrid’s 1986–87 season under Leo Beenhakker was long, unusual, and ultimately dominant. Because La Liga used a two‑phase format that year, Madrid played 44 league matches, first topping the regular season and then winning the championship group, securing their 22nd league title. The team was powered by the legendary Quinta del Buitre core — Butragueño, Míchel, Sanchís, Martín Vázquez — and the extraordinary scoring of Hugo Sánchez, who hit 34 league goals and 43 in all competitions.
In Europe, Madrid reached the European Cup semi‑finals, eliminating Young Boys, Juventus and Red Star Belgrade before falling to Bayern Munich. In the Copa del Rey, they also reached the semi‑finals, losing to Atlético Madrid. The season is remembered for relentless attacking football, huge attendances at the Bernabéu, and the peak of one of the most iconic squads in club history.

Real Madrid’s 1987–88 season under Leo Beenhakker was another year of domestic dominance from the Quinta del Buitre era. Madrid won La Liga for the third consecutive season, finishing 11 points clear of Real Sociedad and scoring an enormous 95 league goals. The team played fast, aggressive football, with Hugo Sánchez again unstoppable: 29 league goals, 35 in all competitions. Míchel, Butragueño, Martín Vázquez and Sanchís formed the core of a side that overwhelmed most opponents, winning 28 of 38 league matches.
Cup competitions were less successful. Madrid reached the Copa del Rey semi‑finals but were stunned by Real Sociedad, losing 0–5 on aggregate. In the European Cup, they again reached the semi‑finals but were eliminated by PSV Eindhoven after two tight legs. Despite the European frustration, the season is remembered as one of the clearest peaks of the Beenhakker era: relentless league form, huge Bernabéu crowds, and a squad operating at near‑maximum power.
