In 1992, the club faced challenges as many players from the championship-winning generation departed, although new talents like Dejan Petković and Anto Drobnjak joined the squad. The previous season's success attracted the attention of European giants, who made lucrative offers for Red Star's top players. Additionally, due to the war in former Yugoslavia, Red Star had to play their home games in Szeged, Budapest, and Sofia, which diminished their chances of defending their continental title. That year, UEFA altered the competition format, with the 1991–92 European Cup being the first to feature two groups of four teams each. Despite the challenges of playing away from home, Red Star performed admirably, finishing second in their group behind Sampdoria. In domestic competition, their main rivals, Hajduk Split and Dinamo Zagreb, exited the league along with all other clubs from Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia. The championship in Yugoslavia, now reduced in size, was played under increasingly precarious conditions as the Bosnian War began. By late May, the United Nations imposed sanctions on the country, effectively sidelining Yugoslav football from the international stage. The breakup of Yugoslavia, the ensuing wars, rampant inflation, and UN sanctions severely impacted Red Star. Between May 1992 and May 2000, they celebrated only one championship victory at the Marakana. However, they did win five domestic cups and had several notable European outings, including the memorable 1996 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup match against Barcelona, featuring stars like Ronaldo and Hristo Stoichkov.
