The rejuvenation of the squad allowed Les Verts to improve during the 1978-1979 season. The recruitment of young Michel Platini and Dutch international Johnny Rep elevated ASSE back to the pinnacle of French football. After a promising third-place finish in 1980, the team won the league title the following year, largely thanks to Platini's outstanding performance. However, they were denied a fifth league and cup double by SC Bastia in the final. The team also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1980 and 1981 but suffered heavy losses at Geoffroy-Guichard to Borussia M'Gladbach and Ipswich Town.
