In the 1996–97 season, under the guidance of Dutch coach Huub Stevens, Schalke 04 secured their first major trophy since 1972 by winning the UEFA Cup final against Inter Milan on penalties. Stevens, initially little-known in Germany, quickly became a cult figure among Schalke fans for his disciplined coaching style. He instilled a strong defensive ethos encapsulated by his motto "Die Null muß stehen" (translated as "It has to read nil"), emphasizing the importance of preventing goals. This successful campaign earned Schalke the nickname "Euro Fighters", a term still cherished by their supporters today.
