Spain’s Euro 1988 campaign ended at the group stage despite an encouraging start. Drawn in a tough group with West Germany, Italy, and Denmark, Spain opened the tournament with a 3–2 victory over Denmark, with goals from Míchel, Emilio Butragueño, and Rafael Gordillo. However, Spain then lost 2–0 to West Germany and 1–0 to Italy, finishing 3rd in Group 1 with one win and two defeats. As only the top two teams progressed to the semi-finals, Spain were eliminated after the group stage with 3 goals scored and 5 conceded.
