CD Tenerife’s 1996–97 season under Jupp Heynckes became one of the most memorable in the club’s history. In La Liga, Tenerife finished 9th with 56 points, scoring an impressive 69 goals but suffering from a leaky defence that conceded 57 — a key reason they couldn’t match the previous season’s 5th place.

The real magic happened in Europe: Tenerife reached the UEFA Cup semi‑finals, eliminating Maccabi Tel Aviv, Lazio, Feyenoord and Brøndby, with iconic performances such as the 2–4 win at De Kuip. Their run ended only in extra time against eventual champions Schalke 04. Heynckes left for Real Madrid at season’s end, closing a two‑year spell that transformed Tenerife into one of Europe’s surprise forces.
