Tottenham’s 1987–88 season was shaped by the lingering disappointment of the dramatic 1987 FA Cup Final defeat to Coventry City, but also by the emergence of a new generation led by Paul Gascoigne. Under Terry Venables, Spurs played attractive attacking football and finished 13th in the First Division, a position that did not fully reflect the talent in the squad. The club remained exciting to watch thanks to the creativity of Gascoigne and the goals of Gary Lineker, who scored 25 league goals. While there was no cup run to match the previous year's FA Cup final appearance, the season is remembered as a transitional one, with Gascoigne developing into one of England’s brightest stars and laying the foundations for Spurs’ success at the start of the 1990s.

Tottenham’s 1988–89 season was a difficult and disappointing campaign that exposed the decline of a side that had been one of England’s most entertaining teams earlier in the decade. Under Terry Venables, Spurs struggled for consistency in the First Division and finished 13th, winning only 13 of their 38 league matches. Injuries, defensive frailties, and a lack of reliable goalscoring hurt their progress, despite the presence of established stars such as Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker. The season was notable for Gascoigne’s growing influence in midfield, with the young playmaker emerging as the club’s brightest talent and one of the most exciting players in English football. Although silverware and European qualification were out of reach, 1988–89 laid the groundwork for the stronger sides that would compete for trophies in the early 1990s.
