In 1996, Trabzonspor came very close to securing their seventh national championship but ultimately lost it to Fenerbahce in the final weeks. By then, Trabzonspor had been waiting 12 years for another national title. They faced Fenerbahce at home in the penultimate week of the season, leading by two points and needing only a draw to clinch the championship. In a frenzied Avni Aker Stadium, Trabzonspor took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Abdullah Ercan in the 20th minute, igniting celebrations throughout Trabzon as fans began to anticipate their seventh national title. Trabzonspor played exceptionally well, but Fenerbahce's goalkeeper, Rüştü Reçber, performed heroically. In the 84th minute, Trabzonspor's hopes were shattered when Aykut Kocaman scored to make it 2-1 in favor of Fenerbahce. Trabzonspor finished the season in second place with 82 points.
