On 20 February 1986, entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi, owner of Fininvest and Mediaset, took over the club, rescuing it from bankruptcy through significant financial investment. He appointed the promising manager Arrigo Sacchi to lead the Rossoneri and brought in Dutch internationals Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten, and Frank Rijkaard. This Dutch trio provided a dynamic attacking presence that complemented the Italian stars Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta, and Roberto Donadoni. Under Sacchi's leadership, Milan secured its first Scudetto in nine years during the 1987–88 season. The following year, they claimed their first European Cup in two decades, triumphing over Romanian side Steaua București with a 4–0 victory in the final. Milan successfully defended their title with a 1–0 win against Benfica a year later, becoming the last team to win consecutive European Cups until Real Madrid did so in 2017. The Milan team of 1988–1990, known as the "Immortals" by the Italian media, has been voted the best club side of all time in a global poll conducted by World Soccer magazine.
