In November 1997, with Anderlecht dropping to ninth place, head coach René Vandereycken was replaced by Arie Haan in December. Despite still searching for their best form under Haan, the team climbed to fourth place, losing only three league games. In March 1998, Haan welcomed two new players from Portugal: Filip De Wilde and Gaston Taument. Taument, who had previously worked with Haan, secured Anderlecht's final European spot with a decisive goal against SK Beveren. In the UEFA Cup, Anderlecht faced challenges. They lost the first-round match against Wüstenrot Salzburg 4-3 but turned the tie around with a 4-2 win in the return match, advancing to face FC Schalke 04. Anderlecht lost both legs of this round (1-0, 1-2), ending their UEFA Cup campaign.
