During the qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup, Argentina emerged as a dominant force, finishing 12 points ahead of second-place Ecuador. In the World Cup, Argentina began with a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to Batistuta. However, in their second match, they were defeated by David Beckham's team and needed to win their final group match against Sweden to advance. Although Hernán Crespo scored an equalizer in the 88th minute after Sweden had taken the lead, Argentina was eliminated in the first round for the first time since 1962 due to England's draw against Nigeria. At the 2004 Copa América, Argentina advanced to the second round, where they defeated Peru and later Colombia. However, they lost to Brazil in the final, missing out on a fourteenth title. Notable players from that squad included Roberto Ayala, Andrés D'Alessandro, Luciano Figueroa, Javier Saviola, Carlos Tévez, Lucho González, Kily González, and Juan Pablo Sorín.
