Qualification for the 2000 European Championship was challenging. England began with a 2-1 defeat against Sweden but managed a 3-1 victory over Poland, their fifth consecutive opponent in a qualifier, thanks to three goals by Paul Scholes. However, draws against Bulgaria (twice) and Sweden meant that they needed another win against Poland to secure second place behind Sweden. During this period, Glenn Hoddle was sacked following controversial remarks in an interview, where he suggested that disabled people were suffering due to sins from a previous life. Kevin Keegan succeeded him as head coach. The crucial match against Poland ended in a 0-0 draw, leaving England dependent on a Swedish victory over Poland. Sweden won 2-0, setting up a "Battle of Britain" playoff against Scotland. Scholes scored twice in the away leg, and despite a 1-0 defeat at Wembley, England qualified for the European Championship in the Netherlands and Belgium. In Eindhoven, England started the tournament well, taking a 2-0 lead against Portugal within 18 minutes, but ultimately lost 3-2 as Portugal took control. England's next match against Germany in Charleroi was a must-win, and they secured a 1-0 victory with a goal from Alan Shearer. Needing only a draw to reach the quarter-finals, England failed to maintain their lead in the final group match. Despite a 2-1 halftime advantage, Romania staged a comeback and secured victory with a last-minute penalty, knocking England out of the tournament.
