In the 1996-97 season Jordi Gonzalvo repeated as coach in Tarragona and managed to put together a team with the same fearsome attack as the previous season but with a much better defence. The team finished top of their league group but failed again in the promotion play-offs against Numancia, Recreativo and Manchego.
