During Euro 1996, they managed a goalless draw against Scotland and secured a 2-0 victory over Switzerland. However, they suffered a 4-1 defeat against England in the same group, although they progressed to the next round as runners-up. On June 22nd, in the quarter-finals, they faced France and were eliminated on penalties after a 0-0 draw, following Clarence Seedorf's miss. In the 1998 World Cup, they were placed in Group E, where they topped Mexico, Belgium, and South Korea, with victories over the latter and draws against the former two. Advancing to the Round of 16, they defeated Yugoslavia 2-1, with Edgar Davids scoring the second goal late in the game, following a missed penalty by Yugoslavia's Predrag Mijatović. In the quarter-finals, they took an early lead against Argentina through Kluivert's goal in the 12th minute, but Claudio López equalized for the Albiceleste. It was only in the 88th minute that they secured victory with a magnificent goal by Bergkamp. Facing Brazil in the semi-finals, they conceded an early goal by Ronaldo, but Kluivert equalized. Despite a scoreless extra time, they lost on penalties, with misses from Cocu and Ronald de Boer. In the match for third place, they were defeated by Croatia 2-1. Bergkamp finished as the competition's second top scorer with five goals, behind Davor Šuker with six.
