In the Euros 2004 group with Germany, Czech Republic, and Latvia, Holland did qualify on a second place for the quarter finals. After a draw versus Germany, Holland lost dramatically from Czech Republic after being 0-2 up. Dick Advocaat made a historic substitute with Paul Bosvelt replacing Arjen Robben, which was not amused. The Netherlands lost control of the match and lost eventually with 3-2. Due to the loss of Germany versus Czech Republic, Holland qualified for the quarter finals by winning from Latvia. In the quarter finals, a penalty shoot-out was required for a place in the semi-finals. Both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Philip Cocu missed their penalty. Eventually it was Edwin van der Sar saving the penalty from Olof Mellberg to qualify Holland for the semi-finals. Holland had to play host country Portugal and lost 2-1 after which Dick Advocaat submitted his resignation.
