In 1997, Juventus marked its 100th anniversary with a series of events titled "Juventus (1897-1997 - One Hundred Years of Juve)," organized jointly by the club and the city of Turin. From May 22 to 27, activities including publishing, multimedia presentations, and philatelic displays were showcased at the Lingotto. The Centenary Exhibition was also inaugurated to trace the club's origin and evolution, alongside the establishment of a fan club boasting over 10,000 members. In the Champions League knockout phase, Juventus advanced by defeating Norwegian side Rosenborg in the quarter-finals (with a 1-1 draw in Trondheim and a 2-0 victory in Turin). In the semi-finals, they comfortably dispatched Ajax with a 2-1 win in the Netherlands and a resounding 4-1 victory in Turin. Despite heading into the final on May 28, 1997, in Munich as favorites, Juventus suffered a defeat against Borussia Dortmund, who boasted five former Juventus players in their squad, ending with a 1-3 scoreline. Despite Alessandro Del Piero's back-heel goal, it proved insufficient for the defending champions.
