Liverpool’s 2002–03 season began with title ambitions after finishing second the year before. Under Gérard Houllier, they started strong—topping the table after 12 matches—but a disastrous run of 13 winless games derailed their campaign. They ultimately finished 5th in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League qualification. However, the team salvaged pride by winning the League Cup, defeating Manchester United 2–0 in the final. Michael Owen was in prolific form, scoring 28 goals in all competitions, while Steven Gerrard and Danny Murphy provided midfield drive. The 2003–04 season was Houllier’s last in charge. Liverpool finished 4th, securing a return to the Champions League but again fell short of silverware. They exited early in both domestic cups and were knocked out in the UEFA Cup fourth round by Marseille. Despite inconsistency, the squad showed promise, with Michael Owen netting 19 goals, and Steven Gerrard emerging as a true leader. The season laid the groundwork for Rafael Benítez’s arrival and the club’s future European success.
