In the 2000-2001 season, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had ambitious goals, investing several hundred million francs to sign players like Nicolas Anelka, Sylvain Distin, Peter Luccin, and Stéphane Dalmat as part of the "PSG Banlieue" project by their shareholder, Canal+. They also brought in young talent Bernard Mendy, while Lionel Letizi replaced Bernard Lama, and Frédéric Déhu was added to strengthen the defense. The objective was to win the French league title and perform well in the Champions League. Despite strong home performances, PSG struggled in away games, preventing them from dominating the league. From November, their results declined sharply, dropping from the top of the table to mid-table in a few weeks. Following a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sedan, coach Philippe Bergeroo was sacked and replaced by Luis Fernandez, who returned to PSG to revive the team. Fernandez recruited players from the Spanish league, such as Mauricio Pochettino and Mikel Arteta, brought back Didier Domi, and swapped Dalmat for Vampeta. However, the team's performance did not improve. PSG was eliminated from the Champions League after a 4-3 loss to La Coruna, despite leading 3-0. The match against Galatasaray was marred by serious incidents in the stands. PSG finished the season in 9th place but saw the arrival of Brazilian star Ronaldinho.
