During Alfonso Solans' sixth season as President, the squad saw several new additions, including midfielders Nordin Wooter, Jose Ignacio, and Roberto Acuña; defender Gary Sundgren; and forwards Yordi and Pier. Key departures included Gus Poyet to Chelsea FC and young forwards Fernando Morientes and Dani to Real Madrid, along with long-time players Higuera, Miguel Pardeza, and Nayim. In his second season as head coach, Luis Costa improved the defense with solid performances from Sundgren, while Jose Ignacio replaced the underperforming Nordin Wooter on the right wing. Midfielders Kily Gonzalez, Santiago Aragon, and Roberto Acuña effectively covered for the departed Poyet and Nayim. The offensive line struggled with poor performances from Yordi and Pier, leading to the winter signing of Paulo Jamelli. The team finished 13th, missing out on the 1998 UEFA Intertoto Cup, but achieved a memorable 2-0 victory against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, only their second league win there in history. In the Copa del Rey, the squad reached the semifinals but was defeated by FC Barcelona.
