Ajax won Europe's most coveted cup for the fourth and final time in its history in 1995. The first three times took place consecutively in 1971, 1972 and 1973. Ajax had a star-studded team in the mid-1990s that included Frank Rijkaard, Jari Litmanen, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars, Jari Litmanen, and Clarence Seedorf. This shirt was issued for the group stage match vs AC Milan, where Seedorf used the shortsleeve shirt. Remarkable on this Champions League shirt is the lack of the sublimated Umbro logo's compared to the fan shirt and the shirt used in the competetion. This sublimated pattern was against the UEFA rules and for that reason removed for this competition.
The 1994-1995 UEFA Champions League season started well for the Amsterdammers. In a group with AC Milan, SV Austria Salzburg and AEK Athena, Ajax managed to get through the group stage without a single loss. With the exception of two draws against Austria Salzburg, all matches were won. The journey to the final went smoothly for Ajax. In the Quarterfinals, Hadjuk Split was beaten 3-0 (0-0 & 3-0) and in the semi-finals none other than Bayern Munich were beaten (0-0 & 2-5).
The final of the tournament was played on 24 May 1995 at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. The opponent was AC Milan, who had already been beaten twice by Ajax in the group stage. The match was not exciting for a long time, but a daring change by Van Gaal decided the game. He brought on 18-year-old Patrick Kluivert, who scored the only goal of the match in the 85th minute. The victory for Ajax meant his big breakthrough. For Frank Rijkaard, it was a memorable match. For the former Ajax player, it was the penultimate official match of his career and he played against his former club AC Milan, where he played for five seasons and achieved many successes.
The number 6 of the team, Clarence Seedorf, played the whole match. After this success in Amsterdam, he set sail for Italy, where he played one season for Sampdoria, before becoming a world-class player at Real Madrid. Later, the 87-time Dutch international played for Inter Milan, AC Milan and Botafogo.
