During the 1997-1998 season, Ajax Amsterdam was managed by Morten Olsen after the success coach Louis van Gaal. One of the key players in the team was indeed Danny Blind. This shirt has been issued by him during this season as it was not commercially available in longsleeves and the sponsor is embossed in comparison to the sublimated sponsor on the fan version.
Danny Blind was a central defender who had been with Ajax since 1986, and was an important member of the team during the 1997-1998 season, despite being 36 years old at the time. He played in 29 league matches that season, scoring two goals, and also played in several matches in the Champions League and the Dutch Cup.

AFC Ajax had a very successful season in 1997-1998, winning the Dutch Eredivisie title by a comfortable margin of 17 points over their nearest rivals, PSV Eindhoven. They also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were knocked out by Juventus.
