During the 1997-1998 season, Ajax Amsterdam was managed by Morten Olsen after the success coach Louis van Gaal. One of the key players in the team was indeed Danny Blind. This shirt has been issued by him during this season as it was not commercially available in longsleeves and the sponsor is embossed in comparison to the sublimated sponsor on the fan version.
AFC Ajax had a very successful season in 1997-1998, winning the Dutch Eredivisie title by a comfortable margin of 17 points over their nearest rivals, PSV Eindhoven. They also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were knocked out by Juventus.

Richard Witschge's career at Ajax started in 1986, following his brother Rob. He made his debut in a match against AZ'67, and a year later, he scored his first goal. In 1987, he and his brother were part of the European Cup II-winning team. Witschge then moved to FC Barcelona in 1991 but had limited playing time due to foreign player restrictions. Despite this, he won several titles with Barcelona. He later played for Bordeaux, had a brief stint with Blackburn Rovers, and reached the UEFA Cup final with Bordeaux.

In the 1996/97 season, Witschge returned to Ajax to provide experience. A notable moment in his career was when he juggled the ball nine times during a match against Feyenoord, which was seen as controversial by Feyenoord fans, though Witschge claimed it wasn't intentional.
