Celtic’s 1982–83 season was packed with drama, goals, and silverware. Managed by Billy McNeill, the club entered the campaign as defending Scottish champions and came agonizingly close to retaining the title, finishing 2nd in the Scottish Premier Division, just one point behind Dundee United. Their attacking flair was undeniable, scoring 90 goals in the league—joint highest with the champions. In domestic cups, Celtic lifted the Scottish League Cup, defeating Rangers 2–1 in a rain-soaked final at Hampden Park. Murdo MacLeod’s thunderous strike and Charlie Nicholas’s opener sealed the win. In the Scottish Cup, they reached the semi-finals but were edged out by Aberdeen. Europe saw Celtic eliminate Ajax in a thrilling tie before falling to Real Sociedad in the second round of the European Cup. The season also marked the rise of Charlie Nicholas, who scored 48 goals in all competitions and was named Player of the Year before transferring to Arsenal.
