In the 1996–97 season, Celtic finished 2nd in the Scottish Premier Division, once again falling short to Rangers, who secured their ninth consecutive league title. Despite earning more points against the rest of the league than Rangers, Celtic lost all four Old Firm derbies, which proved decisive in the title race. Their Scottish Cup campaign ended in the semi-finals against Falkirk, and they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup. In Europe, Celtic exited the UEFA Cup in the first round. Manager Tommy Burns was dismissed before the season ended, with Billy Stark taking over as caretaker.
