The 90s started difficult for Everton because the perfect manager could not be found immediately. Mike Walker did not do well, to say the least, when he was replaced by Joe Royle in 1994. In his first game, he won the Merseyside derby 2-0 over Liverpool. He avoided relegation for Everton and led them to the 1995 FA Cup final against Man Utd. Everton managed to beat United 1-0 to take their first major prize in the 1990s. This also qualified the Toffees for the European Cup Winners' Cup, which was their first European adventure of the 1990s. They reached the second round of the European tournament but were unfortunately eliminated by Feyenoord. Royle did manage to celebrate the FA Charity Shield at the expense of the Premier league Champion Blackburn Rovers. Gavin McCan started his professional career at Everton in 1995. He made 11 appearances for the Liverpool club. He later played for Sunderland and Aston Villa. In 2001, he made his debut in the England team.
