In the qualifying rounds for the 1996 European Championship, Germany faced Bulgaria once again and suffered another defeat. However, both teams secured qualification as the tournament expanded to 16 teams. Germany won their group with a 3-1 victory over Bulgaria. In the opening match of the tournament, they defeated the Czech Republic, followed by a 3-0 win against Russia. Italy was held to a goalless draw in the final group match, resulting in their elimination. In the quarter-finals, Germany defeated Croatia 2-1, with goals from Klinsmann and Sammer. The semi-final against England went into extra time, where Kuntz equalized after Shearer's opener. The match went to a penalty shootout, ending in a 5-5 draw after the initial series. Germany won 6-5 in sudden death, with Andreas Möller scoring the decisive penalty. In the final against the Czech Republic, Germany conceded an early penalty but equalized through Bierhoff. In extra time, Bierhoff scored the golden goal, securing Germany's victory and their status as European champions.
