Italy arrived at Euro 2004 as one of the tournament favourites, boasting a squad packed with world-class talent such as Francesco Totti, Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro Del Piero, Christian Vieri, and Fabio Cannavaro. However, their campaign became one of the most controversial exits in European Championship history. Italy opened with a 0–0 draw against Denmark, followed by a 1–1 draw with Sweden, a match remembered for Zlatan Ibrahimović’s spectacular backheel equaliser. In their final group game, Italy beat Bulgaria 2–1 thanks to a late winner from Antonio Cassano, but it was not enough. Denmark and Sweden drew 2–2 in the other match, a result that sent both teams through on goals scored and eliminated Italy despite remaining unbeaten. The tournament is remembered for Italy’s defensive strength, missed opportunities, and the frustration of going out without losing a game.
