In the summer, Newcastle United sold David Ginola and Les Ferdinand to Tottenham Hotspur. Alan Shearer suffered a severe ankle injury in a pre-season friendly, sidelining him for half the season. Manager Kenny Dalglish brought in goalkeeper Shay Given, midfielder Temur Ketsbaia, striker John Barnes, and 36-year-old veteran Ian Rush.

The highlight of the 1997–98 season was Newcastle's performance in the UEFA Champions League, where they defeated Barcelona 3–2 thanks to a hat-trick by Faustino Asprilla. However, the team struggled in the Premier League after Asprilla's January departure and Shearer's return did not restore their previous form. They also reached the FA Cup final but lost 2–0 to Arsenal.

In March 1998, controversy erupted when chairman Freddie Shepherd and deputy chairman Douglas Hall were caught making disparaging comments about the club and its supporters in a Spanish brothel. Both resigned, and Sir John Hall stepped in as acting chairman.

Newcastle reached the FA Cup final for the first time in 24 years but lost 2–0 to Arsenal. Despite Arsenal's double success, Newcastle qualified for the 1998–99 Cup Winners' Cup. Dalglish’s cautious approach did not resonate with fans used to a more attacking style, and many of his signings were deemed less effective compared to those who left. Finishing 13th and scoring only 35 league goals raised concerns. Despite signing Dietmar Hamann, Nolberto Solano, and Gary Speed, the team's poor start to the 1998–99 season and unsuccessful transfers led to Dalglish's dismissal.
