The latter half of the 1980s marked the beginning of PSV's most successful era. From 1985/86 to 1991/92, the club clinched the national championship six times and secured the KNVB cup thrice. Notably, between 1986 and 1990, PSV achieved a historic feat by becoming Eredivisie champions four consecutive times. The pinnacle of the club's history occurred in the 1987/88 season when PSV triumphed in the European Cup I tournament on May 25, 1988, under the guidance of coach Guus Hiddink. The final against Benfica ended in a 0-0 draw, with PSV emerging victorious in a dramatic penalty shootout, sealed by a decisive penalty from substitute Anton Janssen. This victory led PSV to compete in the World Cup in Tokyo on December 11, 1988, facing Club Nacional. Despite a tie after 120 minutes, PSV succumbed in the penalty shootout, losing 6-7.
