During the summer, Welsh head coach John Benjamin Toshack requested several changes, including the transfers of Bernd Schuster to Atlético Madrid and defenders Oscar Ruggeri and Martín Vázquez to Torino FC. After a failed attempt to acquire Liverpool's John Barnes, President Ramon Mendoza strengthened the team by signing Gheorghe Hagi, Predrag Spasić (following Gheorghe Popescu's rejection), and Villaroya. Despite these moves, a losing streak dropped the team to 6th place, leading Mendoza to replace Toshack with club legend Alfredo Di Stéfano on November 25, 1990. Di Stéfano led the team to win the Supercopa de España against FC Barcelona, but league performance deteriorated with losses to Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, and Barcelona. In February, forward Hugo Sánchez suffered an injury, and the team was knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Atlético Madrid in the round of 16. In March, Real Madrid was eliminated by Spartak Moscow in the European Cup quarter-finals, putting Di Stéfano's position in jeopardy. He resigned after the European exit, and Ramón Grosso served as interim manager for one game before Radomir Antić was appointed as the new head coach. Under Antić, despite Sánchez being sidelined for the rest of the season, the team managed to secure 3rd place in the league, earning a spot in the 1991–92 UEFA Cup. Notable victories included wins against Atlético Madrid and Barcelona in the final rounds of the season.
