Real Zaragoza’s 1995–96 season was a transitional campaign following their European triumph the year before. Under manager Víctor Fernández, the team struggled to replicate past success, finishing 13th in La Liga and exiting both the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in the quarter-finals. They also fell short in the UEFA Super Cup, losing to Ajax after a heavy second-leg defeat. Despite these setbacks, young striker Fernando Morientes emerged as a breakout star, scoring 18 goals across all competitions. The squad blended aging veterans like Miguel Pardeza and Francisco Higuera with rising talents such as Gustavo Poyet, who contributed 12 goals from midfield. New arrivals—including Morientes, Dani García Lara, and Gustavo Adrián López—signaled a shift toward youth, while the departures of Juan Esnáider and Cafu marked the end of an era. Though results were inconsistent, the season laid the groundwork for Zaragoza’s next generation.
