Sheffield United had made their way back to the top flight after two consecutive promotions, but it quickly became clear that staying in the First Division might be a challenge. The club endured a 16-match winless streak at the start of the season, leaving them at the bottom of the table with only 4 points on Christmas Day. However, a remarkable run of seven straight victories at the turn of the year propelled United from 20th to 12th place.
